Lancers Down Jaguars in Long-Awaited Return to Riverside
12/16/2025 10:06:00 PM | Men's Basketball
RIVERSIDE --- The hometown faithful of Riverside got to cheer on their Lancers Tuesday night, as CBU returned to the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center for the first time since November 21. In a narrow battle with the Southern Jaguars, the Lancers turned it on late, keeping CBU unbeaten at home with a 75-67 win.
Tuesday's victory, CBU's second in a row, pushed them to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in Riverside.
"A lot of credit to Southern," said head coach Rick Croy. "We knew this was going to be a really tough game. They are experienced. They're battle-tested, just like we are, but we expected a great fight."
Guard Dominique Daniels Jr. continues to be a game-changer, as he dropped his third consecutive 30-point performance in the win. Daniels Jr. scored 30 on 10-of-21 from the field, including four 3-pointers. He added six boards and dished out six assists.
Daniels Jr. has also shown he can be CBU's ironman, as he played all 40 minutes for the third game in a row. The graduate guard has put together a 40-minute day of work in five of his last six games.
The Lancers were also aided by Thomas Ndong, who recorded a double-double for the second game in a row. Ndong paired 11 points with 11 boards, six coming on the offensive end.
CBU narrowly won the rebound battle, 40-39, making them 9-1 in games where they outrebound their opponent.
The early minutes of Tuesday's action looked as if it would be all CBU, as the Lancers jumped to a 9-2 lead, but Southern did not want to go empty-handed on their visit to Southern California, as they clawed back to take a 16-15 lead. CBU pushed its lead back to seven late in the first half, but the Jaguars would not quit, drawing within two at the intermission.
Southern used a 10-0 run over the end of the first half and beginning of the second to take a three-point lead, their largest of the night. CBU countered with 12 unanswered, giving the Lancers a nine-point advantage. CBU's largest lead eventually came with five minutes remaining when they pulled away by 11.
Once again, Southern countered, pulling within two with 2:40 remaining. CBU then pushed the lead to six on four free throws from Daniels Jr., and after a three-pointer cut Southern within three, CBU provided the final blow with a corner three from freshman Jordan Muller.
"At the end of the game, our guys showed some grit and made some big plays," added Croy. "A lot of it has to do with our synergy. We have a group that really pulls for each other. If you don't do that, it's hard to get it done when it counts. These guys made big plays when it counted."
Muller finished with six points. Martel Williams added ten. Jayden Jackson returned to the floor for the first time in nearly a month and sank one three in his 12 minutes.
Southern saw three players finish in double-figures, led by Cam Amboree with 18.
CBU will return to the Fowler Events Center on Saturday for their final home game of 2025, and a look at a future Big West foe as Sacramento State comes to town. Tickets for the 5 p.m. tip against the Hornets are on sale HERE.
