The Lancers Open The CBU Classic With Late Stumble To USD

RIVERSIDE - California Baptist softball opened the annual CBU Classic with a hard-fought loss to San Diego tonight as the Toreros claimed the 4-3 victory. The result moves both teams to 3-4 on the year, each scheduled for another pair of games in the Classic tomorrow.
CBU took the lead early on Sydney Soto's first sacrifice hit of the season, plating pinch runner Laci Lopez in the second inning. Malachy Russell-Millen worked a clutch six-pitch walk in the fourth with the bases loaded to push Soto across to double the Lancer lead. The Toreros would get one back in the top of the fifth, but CBU answered immediately in the bottom half as Kate Penberthy scored from third on a wild pitch.
Unfortunately, the Toreros would make it 3-2 in the sixth on an unearned run on a throwing error, tie the game on a bloop single in the seventh, and take the winning lead on the next at-bat on a fielding error by the Lancers.
Morgan McConnell gave her side six good innings, allowing only two earned runs to the Toreros. Annika Hollingsworth came in to try to pick up her teammates, but the final unearned run would push the favor toward USD for the night.
CBU is back in action with a doubleheader on Saturday, running it back with USD at 12:30 p.m. before turning around and facing off with Utah State at 3:00 p.m.
