RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist baseball team found its second win on Saturday afternoon in the second installment of the four-game series versus the University of Portland. Head Coach Gary Adcock's team secured the 11-7 win behind another solid outing from the CBU pitching staff and an even more potent offensive performance from the Lancer bats. CBU is now 2-0 on the young season and the weekend loss drops the Pilots to 0-2.
Andrew Rudd made his first home start on the sunny afternoon and found his rhythm after giving up a solo home run in the first inning. The sophomore right-hander would go on to pitch a complete five innings, giving up just three hits and three runs while sitting down three Pilots along the way. The Lancer offense got to work early as Andrew Walters found his way home on a balk from the Pilot pitcher. Bubba Rocha continued to impress on Opening Weekend as he cracked open the game in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run bomb that soared 419 feet.
Cole Howarth doubled down on the attack in the sixth inning, sending his own ball on a ride for a solo shot to give CBU its first lead of the day that it would ultimately never relinquish. The Lancers continued to tack on runs throughout the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings that turned into a five-run lead heading into the ninth inning. The Pilots tried to get something going in the top of the ninth after a single drove in a run, but it was not enough to overcome CBU's 16-hit game.

Julian Alvarez had a day on the diamond that started with a momentum-shifting foul ball catch and ended with three hits and an RBI. Just behind was Walters with two hits and RBI, while Nicholas Dumesnil also picked up his second multi-hit game. On the pitching side, Cameron Teper picked up his first win of the season, while Carson Olsen earned the save after his year hiatus due to injury.
California Baptist will have the opportunity to win the series on Sunday evening at 5 p.m. as the Lancers welcome the Pilots back to Totman for the third game of the Opening Weekend series.
