Lancers Fall to Pilots on Sunday Evening

RIVERSIDE---- The California Baptist baseball team faced off against the University of Portland on Sunday evening in the third game of the four-game series and ultimately fell 9-2. The Lancers move to 2-1 on the young season, while Portland improves to 1-2.

A two-run home run from Taylor Swygart in the second inning gave the Pilots a lead they would never relinquish and kicked off an offensive onslaught that CBU could not keep up with for the first time this series. The Lancers found their way onto the scoreboard at the bottom of the third after Nicholas Dumesnil brought home true freshman Carter Eberhard on a sacrifice fly, but the Pilots responded well with another home run at the top of the fourth. A Jake Brown double brought in Bubba Rocha during the bottom of the fourth for CBU's final run of the game. Another home run and a Pilot sacrifice fly would ensure the game for the visiting team's first win of the season.

Despite the seven-run difference on the final line, the box score almost looks like a different story after CBU's pitching staff combined for 15 strikeouts and limited Portland to five walks. Julian Orozco showed well in his Lancer debut, sitting down eight Pilots and allowing just two hits.

California Baptist will return to Totman on Monday afternoon to close out the series versus the Pilots, looking for its first 2025 series win at 11:00 A.M.
