RIVERSIDE--- The bats were hot on Monday morning for the California Baptist baseball program after besting the University of Portland 18-4 during the final game of the long weekend for the series win. CBU secured three of four games and outhit the Pilots 16-9 during the final installment of a solid series win. The Lancers improve to 3-1 on the year, while the Pilots drop to 1-3 on the young season.
Cody New made his 2025 debut as the Monday starter for Head Coach Gary Adcock and got off to a rocky start after giving up a two-run homer in the first inning. The sophomore left-hander adjusted well, though, and went on to toss five total innings, allowing just four hits while sitting down five pilots for the pitching win. Meanwhile, the other side of the dish was very active for the Lancers. The third inning saw eight runs come across, highlighted by Nicholas Dumesnil's first home run of the 2025 season, which soared 375 feet down the left-field line for a pair of runs. Dumesnil would have another opportunity to bat in the third after the Pilots could not retire the side, allowing the junior outfielder to hit a double to left center for another pair of RBI.
California Baptist would keep the runs coming, tallying another five in the bottom of the fourth inning with several singles. A pair of scoreless innings would give way to two runs accumulated for the Pilots in the top of the seventh, but the Lancers would respond well yet again and tack on another five runs in the bottom of that inning. Chris Ramirez, Ryan Kim, and Dumesnil would all secure a trio of hits on Monday morning, while seven other Lancers each picked up a hit.
Ramirez impressed this weekend with seven hits to open his collegiate debut, leading the Lancers with a .438 batting average. Dumesnil continues to dominate at the place and checks in six RBI across the four-game spread, earning a .375 batting average behind six hits. The CBU pitching staff also pulled out a successful opening weekend, totaling 38 strikeouts and a 4.25 team ERA.
CBU will return to Totman Stadium on Thursday evening as they welcome Pepperdine for a midweek tilt at 6 p.m. before heading down to San Diego for a trio of games in the Tony Gwynn Tournament hosted by San Diego State University.
