RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University softball hosted Hawaii in a midweek tune-up game before heading out for their next big tournament this weekend. The Lancers and Rainbow Wahine held each other scoreless in 12 of the 14 half innings, but the 'Bows managed to plate one more than the home team in the 2-1 decision. CBU falls to 5-7 on the year, while Hawaii is already in double digits in the win column at 10-2.
The teams managed just one hit in the first three innings before Hawaii broke the deadlock in the fourth inning with an RBI single and double to take a 2-0 lead. The Lancers would show life in the bottom half of the inning as left fielder Stevie Robison tallied the Lancers' first hit of the game, a one-out single to right center, but were unable to muster anything to go with that hit.
CBU's Annika Hollingsworth and Morgan McConnell would hold Hawaii to just one hit for the rest of the game before the Lancers made their mark on the scoreboard.
A leadoff home run from Kalena Burns in the bottom of the seventh. Burns' league-leading fifth homer of the season got the crowd and dugout back into it while halving the 'Bows lead. Ashley Annett would follow that with a single, but CBU's rally ended after that hit with three straight outs.
Next up for CBU is a trip to the desert to participate in the ASU/GCU Invitational. The Lancers will split time between Tempe and Phoenix as they challenge #3 Florida, Arizona State, New Mexico State, and Portland State.
