Lancers Put a Scare Into #23 SDSU On Tuesday Night

SAN DIEGO - California Baptist softball hung tight with the 23rd-ranked Aztecs of San Diego State on Tuesday night, tied 2-2 until the bottom of the sixth before the home team stepped up to defend The Mesa and secure the 6-2 victory. The result moves CBU to 7-10 on the season, while SDSU improves to 13-3.

The Lancers hung the opening run on board at the top of the first inning on a Kate Penberthy RBI double, scoring Matti Severns from the first. The Aztecs would answer in the bottom half of the same inning and double that to a 2-1 lead with another run in the bottom of the second.

Penberthy would pick her squad up again at the top of the fifth inning, smashing an RBI triple to right center and again scoring Severns from the first. Her second triple of the season wouldn't be enough to stave off a four-run sixth inning from San Diego State to take the win.

Penberthy would be the only Lancer to record multiple hits against the Aztecs, bumping her current hit streak to five games. Severns, Kalena Burns, Ashlee Annett, and Valerie Alvarez also recorded hits against the No. 23 team in the nation, pushing Annett's team-best hit streak to 11 games in a row and Burns to six in a row.

CBU will have a day to prep and pack for their first trip to Texas this season, heading to Waco for the Baylor Invitational, which will pit the Lancers against Baylor, Sam Houston State, and North Texas in a three-day tournament. First up, CBU will face off against former Western Athletic Conference foe Sam Houston State and Baylor at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively, on Friday the 28th.
