PALO ALTO, CA - California Baptist softball finally got things rolling at the Easton Invitational on Friday afternoon after field conditions forced a cancellation of the original opening matchup against #20/18 Stanford. Unfortunately, the Lancers could not keep pace with Nevada and Stanford, dropping the doubleheader 7-3 and 5-1, respectively. CBU will look to kick this three-game losing streak quickly and get back up to .500 in the standings with tomorrow morning's finale.
GAME ONE: NEVADA 7 - CBU 3
Friday's opener favored the Wolfpack from the start, as Nevada posted the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. They would add three more in the top of the third before the Lancers cut the lead in half courtesy of Ashlee Annett's two-RBI single in the bottom of the frame.
Kate Penberthy smacked an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, scoring pinch runner Jasmine Goins to get CBU within a single run. The Wolfpack wouldn't answer until the sixth inning, but when they did, they made it count with three runs on two home run swings.
GAME TWO: #18/20 STANFORD 5 - CBU 1
California Baptist hung tough with the ranked Cardinals on Friday evening but ultimately fell to #18 despite a late solo homer from Makenna Dashiell. Even though the bats got hot late, CBU battled through two scoreless innings before Stanford broke through with a pair of runs that crossed home plate via a well-placed single to the center field wall. The Lancers continued to battle well and forced another two scoreless innings before the Cardinals rebounded with a three-run bottom of the sixth. The Lancers would put runners on in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't manage to bring them home to finish the game with the 7-3 scoreline.
CBU continued to keep Stanford within arm's reach, aided by Sydney Soto's efforts in centerfield, who had a pair of stellar defensive plays to keep the game close. Dashiell did her part in the top of the seventh after firing a solo shot over the right field wall to put California Baptist on the board. Gabbie Roundtree kept the inning moving with a double. Still, the late comeback was stunted by the Cardinal's closer for the home team's win.
California Baptist will return for its last game tomorrow as they take on the Nevada Wolfpack once more this weekend at Noon.
