RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist baseball program will catch a flight to Arlington, Texas, this week as the squad is set to compete against UT Arlington during its first road Western Athletic Conference series. CBU enters the weekend 2-1 in WAC play after taking down Utah Tech, while UTA is 1-2 after falling to Sacramento State last week.
THE LANCERS AT A GLANCE
The Lancers opened the conference season well last week, earning a pair of hard-fought wins over a strong Trailblazers team. Utah Tech snagged the first game of the series in 10 innings behind efficient pitching, but its defense began to corrode as the weekend went on and gave up the series to CBU. Extra bases contributed strongly to the Lancers' weekend win and continued into the midweek tilt versus UC San Diego. Six doubles, two home runs, and a triple secured the 10-6 win for CBU over soon-to-be Big West foe on Tuesday evening. California Baptist is now 14-11 this season and 4-1 in midweek match-ups.
Nicholas Dumesnil continues to trend upward on the offensive side of things for the Lancers and currently holds the team-high batting average at .327. The junior boasts nine doubles, four home runs, and 10 stolen bases this season on 32 hits. Just behind Dumesnil is true freshman Chris Ramirez, who has brought strong, consistent at-bats for the squad this season. Ramirez is currently hitting .325 with two doubles and two triples while striking out just nine times in 80 at-bats this season.
From the mound, Cody New has been electric for the Lancers and currently owns the 16th-lowest ERA in the NCAA at 1.36. New has sat down 36 batters this season and is 3-1 with a .214 batting average against. The lefty's elite numbers have contributed significantly to the squad's overall team ERA at 3.87, which is the 28th lowest in the NCAA. CBU's pitching staff struck out 35 batters in four games last week, placing them with the third most Ks in the conference.
