Softball Drops Doubleheader Against Grand Canyon

RIVERSIDE - California Baptist softball hosted Grand Canyon in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday night, dropping both games to the Lopes 4-0 and 10-0. GCU (26-6, 5-2 WAC) is now just one game out of first place behind Seattle U, who split with Tarleton on Friday, while CBU (15-19, 3-5 WAC) drops to seventh in the conference.
GAME ONE: CBU 0 - GCU 4
The opening contest got off to a slow start as both lineups took time to figure out the opponent's game-one starter. GCU cracked the code first, in the top of the third, scoring a pair to take a 2-0 lead. They would double their lead in the third with two more scores to go ahead by four. Reliever Lili Arana would come in to close out the third and the game for the Lancers, throwing 3.2 innings and giving up just two hits and no runs.
The Lancer bats would continue to struggle until the very end when Ashlee Annett's two-out single through the right side in the bottom of the seventh rebuffed the no-hit bid from Lopes' ace Taryn Batterton.
GAME TWO: CBU 0 - GCU 10 (5)
Game two did not struggle to get off the ground like game one, as the Lopes posted a six-spot in the top of the first inning. They would add two more in both the second and third innings to reach a 10-0 advantage. GCU would load the bases in the fourth, but Arana, again in relief, quelled the rally with a fly out to center field.
CBU's bats were slightly better in the rematch, recording four hits total as Priscilla Estrada smacked two of them, including a rocket to left field for a standup double, and Annett also connected with a pair.
The series' final game is set for a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday afternoon at Funk Stadium.
