LAS VEGAS - California Baptist softball stopped off in Las Vegas on Wednesday on their way to St. George, Utah, for a single game against Mountain West foe UNLV. The game was a back-and-forth affair, but ultimately, the home Rebels would emerge victorious in extra innings, 7-6.
Five Lancers would record multiple hits in the desert, led by Priscilla Estrada, who was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Ashlee Annett was 2-4 with a walk, bumping her team-leading average up to .372, while the catching duo of Mia Krueger, who started, and Valerie Alvarez, who closed out the game, both went 2-2 tonight with Krueger's two pinch runners each scoring and Alvarez recording a game-high three RBI.
Six of the seven half-innings between the top of the second and top of the fifth saw teams recording at least one run. CBU struck first with one in the second and Kalena Burns's solo shot in the third, but UNLV hit back harder with a four-run bottom third and one in the fourth. The Lancers would tie the game with one in the fourth and two in the fifth courtesy of Alvarez's first RBI hit. The Rebels would take their lead back in the sixth, but Alvarez would come in clutch again in the seventh to tie it again and force extra innings.
Estrada would lead off with a single and eventually make her way to third, but a sacrifice bunt, a ground out, and a foul out stranded the senior 60 feet away from home. The Rebels stumbled out of the gate in the bottom half of the inning, striking out and grounding out to first to quickly go down to two outs. They would then realize the chance and seize the opportunity, reaching on a single to right, advancing on a passed ball, and scoring one pitch later on a single to left center.
The Lancers will continue East this weekend, heading to St. George, Utah, to take on Utah Tech in a three-game series. Friday's doubleheader was threatened by rain in the forecast at the beginning of the week, but the weather looks to be limited mainly to Thursday thunderstorms, so the doubleheader remains as scheduled for 1:00 and 3:30 p.m. Pacific time on Friday, with Saturday's getaway game set for 11:00 a.m. Pacific.
