RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University softball completed its regular season home schedule on Monday night with one final tilt against UC San Diego. The Lancers took a no-hitter into the fifth but needed extra innings to finish off the Tritons, 3-2 in 9. The win bumps the Lancers' record up to 24-27 and gives the squad some positive momentum as they hit the road for the final Western Athletic Conference series this weekend against Tarleton.
Morgan McConnell tossed a masterpiece in the opening five innings of the game by taking a no-hitter 4.1 innings deep. Though she would eventually give up a singular hit, McConnell faced the minimum through five innings on just 33 total pitches thanks to a timely double-play. She held 11 Tritons to seeing just two or fewer pitches, and only twice did a UCSD hitter see five or more pitches.
The Lancer bats were less restricted, finding at least one hit in all but one inning on Monday night. Matti Severns led CBU with two hits and two RBI, the first of which came on a single up the middle in the fifth inning. UCSD would take a late lead in the top of the seventh on a productive groundout and a double to left center, turning up the pressure on the home team with just three outs. Severns would come through again, reaching base as her speed forced a bad throw from the Triton shortstop, scoring Stevie Robison from second to force extras.
Neither team would truly threaten in the eighth, and the Tritons failed to reach base in the ninth, giving CBU's senior hitters a chance at glory one last time. Makenna Dashiell sent an 0-2 strike up the middle for two bases, and fellow senior Malachy Russell-Millen sacrificed her to third. Priscilla Estrada stepped up to the plate with two outs and pushed a 1-2 pitch into shallow left field. The UCSD defender couldn't handle it, but even if it had been fielded cleanly, Dashiell's speed got her home with room to spare, and the celebration between first and second began.
The Lancers will look to keep that momentum going as they travel to Stephenville this weekend for a critical WAC finale. CBU can still mathematically take the 2-seed from the Texans with a sweep, but anything less will leave the Lancers somewhere between the three-and-seven seed, depending on many moving parts. Friday's doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. Pacific time.
