RIVERSIDE--- It was a long Sunday in Riverside as California Baptist Baseball battled Grand Canyon for the final time this weekend. Favor would not be on the Lancer's side after posting an impressive comeback only to be snubbed in the ninth inning with a game-ending batter's interference call. CBU drops to 17-15 on the season and is now 4-5 in Western Athletic Conference play.
The Lope bats stayed hot at the plate, swinging to the tune of a five-spot in the top of the first for a lead that would never be relinquished throughout the game. Despite GCU not giving up its lead throughout the day, CBU threatened and even avoided the run rule in the bottom of the seventh with several battles at the plate to secure the necessary three runs to keep the game alive. Three more runs in the eighth put the Lancers within five of tying the game, courtesy of a two-run shot from Connor Ross and an RBI double from Chris Ramirez. Ryne Palmer shut the door on the Lopes in the top of the ninth to give CBU a chance at the walk-off win, and the Lancers capitalized with two runners in scoring position despite two outs on the board.
It was Jake Brown who battled at the plate for Gary Adcock, forcing six pitches before he was hit on the elbow by the pitch from Cam Cunnings. As he began to remove his batting gloves and tossed away the bat, the umpire signaled that Brown had leaned into the pitch and called him out to end the game. The heartbreaker in Riverside earned GCU the series sweep and marked the end of an era, as CBU will not face the Lopes as a regular-season conference opponent again.
Ross made the most of his first start this weekend, posting four hits, two runs, and four RBI with two doubles. Ben Castelli went three-for-four at the plate, while Nicholas Dumesnil, Ryan Kim, and Chris Ramirez all knocked a pair of hits on Sunday afternoon.
CBU will now turn its attention to a midweek road game as the Lancers head south to San Diego State University on Tuesday before taking a break from WAC play to face the University of the Pacific this weekend.
