RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist baseball program welcomed the highest-ranked team in program history to Totman Stadium on Tuesday evening in #13 UC Irvine and fell to the Anteaters in a tight 9-8 game. Fielding errors plagued the Lancers from the fourth inning on and ultimately gave way to a UCI win, dropping the Lancers to 26-23 on the year.
The first two innings were all CBU after the Lancers posted six unanswered runs by the bottom of the second, highlighted by a pair of two RBI doubles and a two-run home run from Trevor Spainhoward. The visitors managed to put two on the board in the following inning, courtesy of a sacrifice hit and a fielding error by the Lancer infield. Jake Brown led the retaliation in the bottom of the third with his own solo shot for his ninth home run of the season.
The fourth inning was where UCI came alive, scoring four runs on two outs after a fielding error allowed a pair of runs to come across home plate. Another throwing error from the Lancers would plate another two runs for the Anteaters, cutting the CBU lead to 7-6. A solo shot from Colin Yeaman knotted the game in the sixth before small ball from the visitors earned them the lead, and another fielding error in the top of the eighth tacked on the second run of the inning.
The bottom of the ninth had the stadium humming for a comeback win for the home squad, and Connor Ross kept that dream alive after his double scored Ben Castelli for a one-run game. The night ultimately ended in heartbreak for the Blue and Gold after Spainhoward grounded out for the final play of the game. The fielding errors were costly for the Lancers as the Anteaters only scored three earned runs and the CBU pitching staff dealt 12 strikeouts and just five free passes. Castelli led the evening with three hits, while Nicholas Dumesnil posted his 21st multi-hit game this season after going two-for-four.
CBU will now turn its attention to a crucial Western Athletic Conference weekend as the team heads to Washington to face off against Seattle U beginning Friday at 11:00 a.m.
