RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist women's soccer program opened its first week of the season with a win and a loss, taking down CSU Bakersfield at home on opening night before dropping the match to #5 USC in Los Angeles on Sunday evening. The Lancers head into the second week of the year with a 1-1 record as they gear up to face UC Santa Barbara and CSUN.
CBU opened its season with a 1-0 win over the Roadrunners and showed glimmers of great soccer throughout the week, specifically from a solid backline. Junior transfer Jess Ramirez has proven to be an instant game-changer after scoring a fantastic goal off her left foot during opening night and generating much of the offense against the Trojans on Sunday. The Lancers will lean heavily on her and Kentucky transfer Ashley Mekitarian in the midfield as playmakers throughout the season. To no one's surprise, Summer Allen has yet again proved to be an anchor in CBU's backline and helped the Lancers pick up their first shutout of the year on Thursday.
California Baptist will travel to Santa Barbara on Thursday evening for a late midweek match against the Gauchos, who are 0-1 on the early season. UCSB opened its year with a 2-1 loss to LMU in what proved to be an exciting match with a late goal from the Lions for the win. Caitlyn Simons had the tying goal for the Gauchos and will be a problem on the offense for UCSB, entering her sophomore season looking to build off an impressive freshman debut. The 2024 Big West Tournament Champions returned 24 players to their roster this season and have welcomed three transfers with six freshmen debuting for the Gauchos.
Following their midweek game, CBU will then head to Los Angeles for a match-up against CSUN on Sunday evening. The Matedors remain undefeated this season, boasting a 2-2 draw against Saint Mary's and a 1-0 win over San Jose State. Most notably, the Matedors have scored in both games this season, with goals coming from three different players. Cailey Jackson will be the player to watch from the Matedor's side, posting a goal and assist during the squad's first week of the season. CSUN is set to face Grand Canyon on Thursday evening before welcoming the Lancers on Sunday at 7 p.m.
Lancer fans can catch Thursday's match against UCSB on ESPN+; however, Sunday's game against CSUN will not be streamed.
