Lancers Battle UCSB on Thursday Evening

SANTA BARBARA, CA--- The California Baptist women's soccer team headed up the coast on Thursday evening to take on soon-to-be Big West foe UC Santa Barbara. A lack of offense from the Lancers ultimately did them in, falling to the Gauchos 2-0 to move to 1-2 on the season.
A slow start to the match for the Lancers gave way to a slow half in general, but the CBU backline once again did well to stave off their opponent through the first 40 minutes of the game. A late first-half goal for the home team sent California Baptist into the locker room down at halftime, forcing CBU to pick up their attack during the next 45 minutes of play. The Lancers did well to generate more chances and posted four corner kicks with several near goals, but ultimately could not find the back of the net.
"This was a head to head battle of the 2024 Big West and WAC Champions. In the first half, we were too inconsistent for our standards in controlling our controllables. Second half was better as we dominated play and nearly scored multiple times. I thought we created the more dangerous scoring opportunities in the game, but credit their goalkeeper for coming up with some timely saves. Our keeper Mikayla made a terrific one handed save from an off balanced shot," remarked Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "While this was a tough, valuable lesson our young team learned tonight there were a lot of positive takeaways as well to build on. Tomorrow we go back to work and turn our focus to our next opponent on Sunday".
The Gauchos outshot the Lancers 13-5, posting eight shots on goal compared to CBU's one. Summer Allen and the California Baptist defense still look sharp, but two impressive goals from UCSB ultimately secured the home team's first win of the 2025 season.
The Lancers will be back in action on Sunday, August 24th at 7 p.m. as they head to CSUN for their third away game of the season.
