STEPHENVILLE, TX --- The finale of CBU's WAC opening road trip brought the Lancers to Stephenville, as CBU looked to capture win number one of the conference season against Tarleton State. More than 40 minutes of basketball were needed to decide a winner, and after their first trip to overtime this season, CBU came out on the wrong end of an 81-76 finish.
Saturday's loss, CBU's third in a row, drops the Lancers to 0-3 to start the WAC season. Tarleton State is now 2-1.
Dominique Daniels Jr. wrapped up the road trip with 25 points, his ninth game with 20 or more points this season. Rene D'Amelio was next in the scoring column as the freshman dropped a career-high 12 points on a perfect 5-of-5 from the field. Bradey Henige added 11 points.
D'Amelio and Henige each pulled down eight boards, as CBU outrebounded the Texans 37-23. The Lancers are now 10-3 this season when outrebounding their opponent.
Tarleton took a one-point lead into the intermission of Saturday's game, thanks to an 8-0 run for the Texans. CBU led by as much as eight in the first half, with the Lancers hitting that point on an alley-oop from Jordan Muller to D'Amelio. A floater by Miles Daniels near the halftime horn was originally waved off for a shot clock violation, but after review, the call was reversed, ending Tarleton's late run.
The Texans pushed their lead to seven on two occasions in the second half, but CBU countered with an 8-1 run that included a pair of threes from Muller to level the game at 47 with nine minutes to go. Part of the CBU run was aided by an eight-minute stretch where Tarleton failed to connect on a field goal.
The score remained close for the remainder of regulation, leading to the final minute, where a 3-pointer and a later free throw from Jayden Jackson gave the Lancers a three-point lead with 36 seconds remaining.
Two baskets from Tarleton's Dior Johnson wiped away the Lancer lead as the Texans forced overtime. Tarleton led for 4:43 of the five-minute extra period, leading them to the WAC win. A chance at a game-tying basket came for CBU with 2.4 seconds left, down three, but an inbounding violation negated an opportunity to level the score.
Johnson led all scorers with 34 points, his fifth 30-point game of the season, which leads Division I.
The Lancers will return to Riverside this week for the home opener of the WAC season. Utah Tech will be in the Fowler Events Center on Thursday for a 7 p.m. tip. The homestand wraps up on Saturday with a visit from Southern Utah.
