1/8/2026 10:06:00 PM | Men's Basketball
RIVERSIDE --- One streak remains intact while another met its end on Thursday, as the Lancers took down Utah Tech, 84-72, inside the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center. The win, CBU's first of the conference season, keeps the Lancers unbeaten at home while simultaneously ending CBU's three-game skid.
The Lancers are 7-0 at home this year and have won 11 straight in Riverside dating back to last season. CBU moves to 1-2 in WAC action with the win, while Utah Tech takes its first loss, moving them to 2-1.
Thursday's game was CBU's first at home since a December 20 win against Sacramento State. The Lancers kicked off the WAC season with three straight on the road, each resulting in a conference loss.
Head coach Rick Croy was asked about the significance of Thursday's win and noted, "I don't want to downplay the significance of the win, but our internal was far less panicked than the external."
Croy added, "Those were some tough road games. We didn't compete as well as we would have liked to. We have to play better than we played tonight. We have to compete better than we competed tonight. But it's January, and we just have to keep chipping away."
Devon Malcolm was the Player of the Game in Thursday's win as he dropped a career-high 20 points in 16 minutes off the bench. Malcolm didn't just excel on the offensive end, as he also contributed six rebounds and four steals.
On Malcolm's night, Croy noted, "I thought Devon Malcolm had a tremendous performance for us tonight. It starts with his attitude. I brought a challenge to him about 48 hours ago. He more than accepted it. He embraced it, and it showed up tonight in his play and his competitive level for our team tonight. He was special."
Dominique Daniels Jr. also finished with 20 points, his tenth 20-point performance of the season. Martel Williams closed the night with 17. Jonathan Griman led CBU with seven boards. The Lancers outrebounded Utah Tech 39-25.
The Lancers took a nine-point advantage into the locker room on Thursday, thanks in large part to a 10-0 CBU run near the end of the half. The lead sat with the Lancers for the bulk of Thursday's game, as CBU held the advantage on the scoreboard for over 35 minutes.
CBU's lead touched as high as 15 with just under ten minutes remaining in regulation.
Utah Tech was led by Ethan Potter, who finished with 20 points. Both teams wrapped up the night connecting on 48 percent from the field.
Thursday was the first of three meetings between the Lancers and Utah Tech this season. The Trailblazers will return to Riverside in two weeks. CBU will visit Utah Tech on February 14.
CBU will get one day of rest before returning to action on Saturday as Southern Utah visits the Fowler Events Center. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. Tickets are on sale HERE.
