RIVERSIDE – The Lancers battled Big West-leading UC Santa Barbara to a hard-fought 0-0 draw on Saturday night, extending their unbeaten run at home to seven games.
CBU moved to 6-1-3 overall and 1-1-2 in Big West play with its third draw of the season, while the Gauchos moved to 7-1-5 overall and 2-0-2 in conference play. Originally scheduled for 2 p.m., the match was moved to 7 p.m. due to the heat, but the change did little to slow down either side as both teams put together strong defensive performances throughout the night.
With the draw, the Lancers extended their shutout streak to nine consecutive games, matching the program's Division I-era season record set by the 2025 team.
The opening half saw limited offensive chances for both teams as each side battled for possession and worked to break through the opposing defense. Graduate goalkeeper Mikayla O'Brien came up with some key saves to keep the Gauchos off the scoreboard, recording two saves before halftime.
Neither team was able to find the breakthrough as the match remained scoreless heading into the second half.
CBU came out with more attacking pressure after the break, creating several opportunities in the final third. Senior midfielder Anja Jestrovic and freshman defender Jaelynn Hillenbrand consistently sent dangerous crosses into the box, but the Lancers were unable to find the finishing touch needed to take the lead.
At the other end, O'Brien continued to anchor the Lancers' defense. The graduate goalkeeper made four more saves in the second half, finishing the night with six total saves and securing another shutout for CBU.
"I was impressed with our mental toughness and grit tonight," said head coach Kristen St. Clair.
"Clearly fatigue caught up to both teams in the heat and second game of the weekend. We played with a gritty fortitude as the game became more territorial and less tactical. Second half we controlled play better and created better on-goal attacking opportunities. Mikaela O'Brien came up with 2 point-blank saves in a row to help us earn the 9th shutout on the year. Big West is a league of margins, very little separates all the teams, which are very talented and difficult to play each week. Just one of the reasons it is the best mid-major conference in the country. Â
We don't play until next Saturday which will help us rest and recover from some injuries." Â
The Lancers earned another point in the Big West standings and will return to action next Saturday when they travel to Long Beach State. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
