RIVERSIDE--- There might be nothing more romantic than a walk-off win after 17 innings on Valentine's Day for the California Baptist baseball program to kick off its doubleheader versus Cal State Fullerton. CBU would go the distance and remain perfect at home with another win to cap off the evening, taking the lead in the series versus the Titans. The Lancers move to 2-1 on the season, while CSUF drops to 1-2.
The first game of the evening was a rollercoaster of back-and-forth defensive gems, highlighted by solid pitching on both sides. CBU struck first in the fourth inning, but CSUF rallied in the top of the sixth with a run of their own. The 1-1 knot would stay tied through the 11th inning when the Titans knocked one out of Totman Stadium for two runs to take a lead they wouldn't hold onto for long. The Lancers were able to put a few players in scoring position before Riley Hunsaker would come up big with a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the inning. Cole Howarth completed the comeback with an RBI single to tie the game once again in the bottom of the 11th.
Five more scoreless innings gave way to the 17th inning, which saw Fullerton capitalize on a tired CBU squad and score one run on a wild pitch. With the game on the line, Gary Adcock's squad put together a few strong at-bats and loaded the bases. A walk tied the game thanks to a patient Samuel Lopez before Cameron Andrews was struck by a wild pitch, securing the walkoff 5-4 win for California Baptist.
The second game of the evening was just as competitive, spiraling into a pitcher's duel between Ryne Palmer and Jayden Harper. The pair staved off runs until the bottom of the fourth inning, and a double from Carter Eberhard would send Bryce McFeely home to an early lead. Fullerton responded well with a bases-clearing double for a trio of runs, but true freshman Diesel Toth came in a clutch with a two-run bomb that ran 357 feet for his first collegiate home run.
Kody Smathers made his collegiate debut in the top of the sixth inning, immediately tossing a pair of strikeouts to keep the tie alive. Carter Eberhard put an end to the 3-3 scoreline with his first collegiate homer that went 406 feet before Toth would make his presence known again with an RBI double. Cole Hansen got in on the fun and knocked another RBI double for the fourth run of the inning, securing a 7-4 lead into the top of the seventh. The final inning of the evening saw fatigue creep in for the Lancers, and a few fielding mistakes would give way to three runs for the Titans, but CBU held on for the 7-6 win.
California Baptist will finish off the opening weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. in Fullerton at Goodwin Field.
