CBU Shuts Out Fullerton on Sunday, Secures Opening Weekend Series Win

FULLERTON, CA--- The California Baptist baseball program came up on the right side of Opening Weekend after shutting out Cal State Fullerton on Sunday afternoon to secure the win for the four-game series. The 7-0 win improves the Lancers' season record to 3-1, before CBU will host its next four-game homestand versus Seattle University beginning Thursday this week.

Gary Adcock's squad capitalized on the freshman pitcher taking the mound during the fourth game of the season, picking up a trio of runs in the first inning for an early lead. The next three innings saw both pitchers dial in and keep the game scoreless as CBU's starter Michael Malki secured a career high four strikeouts during his four innings of action. A sacrifice fly from Carter Eberhard brought home Chris Ramirez during the top of the fourth to extend the Lancer lead, and a throwing error in the eighth from the home squad brought in one run for CBU. Bryce McFeely got a late offense going with an RBI single, and Riley Hunsaker joined the fun with another for a 7-0 final line.

The California Baptist pitching staff did its job and held on for the shutout win, totaling eight strikeouts and limiting the Titans to six hits. Malki led the staff with four strikeouts on four innings, while giving up just two hits.

From the plate, the win was a group effort as no one picked up more than one RBI, but Ramirez led the way with a pair of hits.

CBU will return to Totman this upcoming weekend as it welcomes Seattle University for a four-game series, beginning Thursday.
