CBU Drops Conference Opener to #19 San Diego State

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's water polo opened up conference action on Saturday afternoon, falling 10-15 to the visiting #19 San Diego State Aztecs.
The Aztecs move to 8-6 overall with the win and are 1-0 in GCC action, while the Lancers fall to 7-5 overall.
The Aztec offense started strong with four quick goals compared to one for CBU to force Head Coach Julie Snodgrass to burn a first-period timeout. SDSU would connect on another goal before the period ended, leading 5-1. Emmie Ramirez and the Lancers struck first in the second period, but that would be quickly followed by four straight Aztec goals, all of exclusions and penalties. Niya Bumbaca would score twice to mitigate the damage a tad, but the Lancers would still trail 9-4 at the half.
CBU would get strong offensive contributions from its bench in the third period as Morgan Gates and Bella Raynes would score three of CBU's goals in the period, as they would outscore SDSU 4-3 in the frame. The Lancers would pull within two goals of SDSU early in the fourth period as they would dent the twine on two early goals to make it 12-10. The Aztecs would hold off the comeback attempt with three straight goals to end the period as they would pull out the 15-10 victory over CBU.
Ramirez and Bumbaca would each score five points in the match, with Ramirez recording another hat trick with three goals and two assists. Gates would have a nice performance off the bench with two goals and an assist while also recording a steal. Tyanna Schneider and Aleksandra Antanasaijevic would split time in the goal and combine for seven total saves.
NEXT: The Lancers will be on the road next weekend, facing Azusa Pacific on Saturday, February 21, in another GCC match.
