CBU Wins High-Scoring Shootout over APU in Glendora

GLENDORA, CA--- The California Baptist University women's water polo picked up a Gold Coast Conference victory on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Azusa Pacific Cougars 18-14 on the road.
The win came in the Lancers' second GCC match of the season, as they improved to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play. APU will drop to 11-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play and will also suffer its first home loss of the season.
The Cougars struck first in the conference battle with Kori Cunningham finding the back of the net at the 6:28 mark in the first. APU would rack up a quick 3-1 lead before the Lancers would score four of the next five goals to end the period ahead 5-3. CBU's offense kept humming along in the second period with five total goals in eight minutes, while the Cougars would only come up with two goals as the Lancers would take a commanding 10-5 lead at halftime.
The APU offense surged in the third quarter, scoring six goals to cut the lead to three as the game transitioned to the fourth quarter. The Cougars continued to rally and would score the opening two goals of the frame to force Head Coach Julie Snodgrass to burn a timeout to stop the momentum. Out of the timeout, Reese Beringer would score a quick goal to give the Lancers a 15-13 lead. From there, the Lancers would completely shut down the comeback attempt with three more goals on their ensuing four possessions to pull out the 18-14 victory and earn their first GCC victory of the season.
The combination of Emmie Ramirez and Niya Bumbaca was special once again for the Lancers, with Bumbaca leading the scoring with five goals. Ramirez led the points category for CBU with seven, scoring four goals and dishing out three assists as well. Beringer would record a hat trick as well with three goals, while Morgan Gates and Devyn Ruffer would both have two goals.
NEXT: The Lancers will host Santa Clara in a GCC contest on Saturday, February 28, at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
