RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University baseball team opened up its second non-conference series of the season with a 14-6 victory over the Seattle U Redhawks at Totman Stadium on Thursday night.
The Lancers move to 4-1 in the early portion of the season while the Redhawks are still looking for their first victory of the young season.
Pitching and terrific defense were the early tokens of the game as the Lancers caught the Redhawks stealing twice in the opening inning to gain some early momentum. Connor Ross would get the party started for the Lancers, bringing home Chris Ramirez on a single down the right field line. Kody Smathers, who made his first collegiate start on the mound, would strike out three batters in the top of the second, stranding two Redhawk base runners.
The Lancers would begin to blow open the game in the bottom of the third, starting with a double from Bryce McFeely to deep left center. Ben Castelli would bring home McFeely on a single before a Tommy Entrekin bomb would bring home two runners and make it 5-1 in favor of the Lancers. Entrekin made the most of his collegiate debut, registering three hits and a home run in his first time suiting up for the blue and gold. The Redhawks would add two more in the top of the fourth to make it close, but CBU would cancel those out with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth.
The Redhawk offense stayed hot in the fifth with three more runs coming across the plate, but CBU would mitigate the damage with two more runs courtesy of RBI's from Cole Hansen and Riley Hunsaker. The Lancers would put the game away in the bottom of the seventh by tacking on five more runs off five hits in the inning. CBU's pitching and defense would seal the victory with some spectacular catches in the outfield from Eric Ruiz and Matthew Bline to seal the 14-6 win for the Lancers.
Smathers would register six strikeouts on the mound in a little over four innings of work, while Cameron Teper would earn the victory as a reliever with just three hits allowed in three innings, while also striking out six Redhawk batters. Four Lancers would record three hits in the victory, led by Castelli and McFeely, who would also have three RBI's in the game. Entrekin, in his collegiate debut, would have three hits and two RBI's while also scoring a pair of huns at the DH position.
The Lancers will be back at Totman Stadium tomorrow evening for game two of the series against the Redhawks for a 6 PM PT start.
