TEMPE, AZ --- California Baptist shifted its Arizona trip to Tempe on Saturday, as the final two games of the ASU/GCU Invitational awaited the Lancers. The day began with another offensive onslaught by head coach Brandon Telesco's squad, but the nightcap saw CBU's record win streak come to an end against a nationally ranked foe.
The Lancers exit Arizona having gone 3-1 across Phoenix and Tempe. CBU's Division I era record win streak ends at 14 games.
CBU opened the day taking on the Roadrunners of CSU Bakersfield for the second day in a row, and the fourth time this season. Similar to the previous three meetings, CBU put a stop to the game after five innings as the Lancers blanked CSUB in a 14-0 rout.
Makayla Medellin was the star of Saturday's first game as she finished 1-for-2 with five RBI. Medellin started CBU's scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and added to her performance with a grand slam in the second.
The Lancers pushed across four runs in the first inning. Brooklyn Bassett singled home a run to make it 2-0. Sydney Peterson then tripled, plating Bassett. A passed ball allowed Peterson to later score the fourth run of the inning.
CBU continued the power surge in the fourth, starting with Bassett, who hit her third home run of the weekend, all against Bakersfield, pushing the score to 10-0. Next came the first collegiate home run from Bethany Millen, a two-run shot, padding CBU's lead to a dozen runs. Savannah Gatewood then drove in the final two runs on a double to center field.
Annika Hollingsworth improved to 4-0 this season with her five-inning shutout performance. Hollingsworth allowed four hits and struck out two.
Next came the finale of the weekend for CBU, a meeting under the lights with Arizona State. The Sun Devils entered the game with an equal 17-3 mark and are ranked No. 23 nationally.
The Lancers were the first to tack on a run as Ashlee Annett plated Medellin in the first to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead. The Sun Devils responded with six unanswered runs to put the Lancers in a 6-1 hole.
Annett added her second RBI of the game in the fifth, a double to plate Matti Severns. Peterson then drove in Annett to cut ASU's lead to three. But the Sun Devils had another counter as two home runs in the fifth and sixth pushed their lead to 10-2.
Medellin and Annett would add an RBI each in the seventh, but the comeback would stop there as ASU took the ballgame, 10-5.
Miranda De Nava moves to 5-3 after allowing eight runs across eight hits in 5.1 innings of work.
The Lancers will return to John C. Funk Stadium this week as they take on LMU for the second time this season. Tuesday's first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
