
BASE Preview: CBU Heads to the East Coast for Final Weekend of Nonconference

RIVERSIDE--- California Baptist baseball will head to the East Coast this weekend to take on St. John's University in its final nonconference series. This will be the first time these two teams meet, and the Lancers enter the weekend affair strong with a 21-5 record after sweeping Evansville last week. St. John's comes into the weekend with a 10-14 record after besting CBU's Western Athletic Conference foe UT Arlington last week.
The Lancers showed off their impressive lineup once again against Evansville and then again versus UC Riverside on Tuesday night, finishing the week with a perfect 4-0 record. Chris Ramirez earned WAC Player of the Week honors after his .500 week at the plate, highlighted by a grand slam for his first home run in Riverside. Michael Malki shone last night with five shutout innings against the Big West squad, leading the Lancers to a 12-1 win and his fifth pitching win of the season.
The Lancers are showing well so far this season and rank third in doubles (68), fourth in hits (294), and fifth in doubles per game (2.62) nationally. The CBU pitching staff also checked in fourth in strikeouts per nine innings (12.3) and sixth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.52). Individually, CBU's Michael Malki was fifth in pitching victories (5) and Bryce McFeely was sixth in doubles (12). The Lancers led all WAC foes in team batting average (.320), runs scored (201), hits (294), and doubles (68), while also owning the best team ERA (3.21) and most strikeouts (324 in 238.0 IP).
For St. John's, just two hitters are hitting over .300: Shaun McMillan and Adam Agresti. McMillan enters the weekend with a .316 average and 30 hits this season, securing five doubles and one home run this year. Agresti boasts nine home runs this season as a team high individually and four doubles with a .313 average, while making it on base at least once every game this year. As a squad, the Red Storm is batting .244 and has a .334 on-base percentage, while being aggressive on the base paths with 36-47 stolen bases.
The Red Storm pitching staff sits with a 6.04 ERA about midway through the year. Leading the way for St. John's is Liam O'Leary, who owns a 2.39 ERA and is 2-2 this season. O'Leary has been a go-to guy for the Red Storm this year, tossing 37.2 innings with 24 strikeouts across six starts. Just behind in stats is Evan Chaffee with a 4.75 ERA and 23 strikeouts this season.
The series is set to begin tomorrow afternoon with a first pitch at noon Pacific Standard Time.
