RIVERSIDE --- California Baptist outfielder Makayla Medellin has been named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Player of the Week. Medellin had the hot bat for the Lancers during their trip to Boise, as her surge of power gained the respect of the conference.
The Lancers played six times last week, finishing 2-4. CBU enters this week 19-8 overall.
Medellin's bat was on full display during CBU's five-game trip to Boise for the Blue Collar Classic. The senior outfielder finished 7-for-17 (.412) with five home runs, 12 RBI, and seven runs scored. She also stole a base and recorded a double.
The trip began with a 2-for-4 showing against Portland State. Medellin hit her first home run of the weekend in the loss to the Vikings. She bounced back that afternoon with a 2-for-3 performance at the dish with two home runs and four RBI in a win against Boise State.
Medellin's two home run performance was the second by a CBU player this season, joining Brooklyn Bassett, who hit two in a game last week against CBU Bakersfield.
CBU began Friday, taking on St. Thomas, and for the only time in Boise, Medellin did not hit a home run. But she did leave the yard in CBU's second game of the day, a 6-4 win against Weber State. With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Medellin won the game with a walk-off grand slam.
She wrapped up the trip the next day with a 2-for-3 showing and a home run in CBU's second game against Weber State.
Through 27 games, Medellin leads the Lancers with eight home runs and 32 RBI. Her .357 batting average is second on the team behind Kenzie Farrier-Pilon (.400).
The Lancers will be back in action starting on Tuesday with the first of back-to-back games in San Diego. CBU will take on UC San Diego on Tuesday, and then shift to San Diego State for a Wednesday meeting.
CBU will be back at John C. Funk Stadium this weekend for a three-game series against North Dakota State.
