Explosive Offense Leads Lancers to Season Series Sweep of UCR

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist baseball program completed its season-long series sweep over UC Riverside on Tuesday afternoon, downing their crosstown rivals 18-6 for a perfect 4-0 record this year. The Lancer offense came to life in the third inning, and CBU never looked back, highlighted by a home run by Bryce McFeely. Gary Adcock's squad improves to 34-11 overall this season.
A pair of singles kick-started the offense for the Lancers, thanks to Riley Hunsaker and Cole Howarth, in the third inning. Ben Castelli dribbled in another run during the fourth inning with a well-placed single, but the floodgates opened in the sixth with another four-run inning in favor of the Lancers. A double from Chris Ramirez and a home run from McFeely were the highlights of an explosive inning, ringing up a seven-run lead headed into the final third of the game.
The Highlanders cut into the lead with a home run of their own in the bottom of the sixth, but the Lancers responded well with a sacrifice fly to score one run before capitalizing on a wild pitch for their second of the inning. The home team was persistent nonetheless and tagged another run in the eighth, but Adcock's squad was not having it and put up a six-run ninth inning to ensure the victory. It was a bullpen game in the truest sense of the word as a combined 17 pitches saw time on the mound this afternoon in Riverside. The CBU pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts, while allowing 11 hits and six runs.
Chris Ramirez led the way with three hits on four at-bats with one RBI. McFeely totaled four RBI during his time uptown, while Kody Smathers totaled three strikeouts for a team high in Riverside.
California Baptist will travel to Utah Valley this weekend as Western Athletic Conference play continues, beginning Friday.
