RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University baseball team dropped the second game of its series with Sacramento State on Saturday evening, falling 6-5 to the visiting Hornets.
The loss is just the second home conference of the season and the fifth home loss overall for CBU this season. For Sacramento State, the win keeps them alive for a share of the regular-season title at 7-7 in the conference standings.
The Hornets' offense got going early in the first inning with four total hits that would produce three runs to grab the early lead, as they did on Friday night. Sacramento State would add another run in the second to extend the lead to four. CBU would respond in a big way in the bottom of the third inning, scoring five runs on six hits. The offense started with a pair of singles from Camden Andrews and Chris Ramirez, and then was followed up with a home run to right center from Bryce McFeely to square the game at four runs apiece. On the next at bat, Connor Ross would round the bases for the second time in two games to give the Lancers a 5-4 advantage.
Sacramento State would get back in front in the fifth inning, scoring on a walk and a sacrifice fly to regain the advantage. The Lancers' next best chance to tie the game would come in the seventh inning as Ramirez would advance all the way to third base off a stolen base and a balk, but would be stranded there after the Sac State pitcher would produce a strikeout and groundout to end the inning. CBU would be in some trouble in the ninth as the Hornets would put two runners on, but John Carlson would earn the final out of the inning to strand them and set up a potential walk-off situation for CBU. The Hornets would allow one base runner in the bottom of the ninth but would not let it go any further to even the series at one game apiece.
The Lancers will finish off the series tomorrow afternoon at noon, with a senior day ceremony preceding the game at 11:30 AM PT at Totman Stadium.
