RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Chantal Millard's grand slam in game 2 put a fitting exclamation point to the NAIA's No. 1-ranked California Baptist's, 9-1, 9-2, sweep of NCAA Div. III Redlands at Big League Dreams Thursday.
The Lancers (15-1) pounded out 18 hits on the day, as Geanie Jenkins and Erin Moore each homered on the afternoon. It was California Baptist's 11th and 12th wins in a row in just its first doubleheader of the year.
Candice Thomas pitched a gem in game one, with 4 shutout innings where she surrendered just one base hit, no walks and struck out 4 to improve to 7-1. She picked up the save with a shutout inning of work in game 2, as Amy Thomas went the first 6 frames for the victory, allowing just 2 unearned runs on 4 hits. Amy Thomas struck out 8 and issued to walks to improve to a staff-best 8-0.
Jenkins and Shawna Rainwater each singled in a run in a 4-run first inning to start game one, and Nikki Lowe's second-inning RBI single made the score 5-0 after just 2 frames. Jenkins then hit a 2-run blast in the fourth inning to clean up after Chantal Millard and Lowe's back-to-back doubles, making the score 8-0.
Arlene Martinez' run-scoring double plated the Bulldogs' only run of the game in the top of the fifth, but Millard's triple in the bottom of the inning put the Lancers ahead, 9-1, enforcing the 8-run mercy rule to end the game.
Moore laid into a 2-run shot in the first inning of game 2, following an RBI single by Jenkins and a run-scoring double by Cassandrah Carreon, giving the Lancers their second first-inning 4-0 lead of the afternoon.
With Amy Thomas in the circle, the Lancers cruised through the early innings, building up a 9-0 advantage on a second-inning RBI single by Jenkins and a third-inning grand slam from Millard. Martinez tripled in 2 runs in the Bulldogs' fourth inning, making the final score 9-2.
