RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The NAIA's top-rated Lancers blasted 23 hits en route to a, 17-1, 9-0, sweep of Concordia-Nebraska in non-conference action Thursday.
The wins are California Baptists' 19th and 20th in a row, as it improves to 23-1 on the season. The team returns to GSAC action with a doubleheader against Hope International this Saturday (March 17) at Fullerton JC. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs--who had just taken a pair of 1-run losses at No. 10 Concordia-Irvine Tuesday afternoon--fall to 4-7 on the campaign.
Courtney Weber went deep on a pinch-hit grand slam to put an exclamation point on a 12-run fourth inning in game one, as the Lancers hit around to change the complexion of the game from a 5-1 contest to a 17-1 mauling.
Concordia-Nebraska had coaxed 3 consecutive walks from Candice Thomas (11-1) with one out in the top of the fourth, and Samantha Hellenbusch singled in one run, but that's all the Bulldogs would get, as Thomas bore down with a pair of groundouts to escape the jam. Overall, the Bulldogs reached base 9 times, stranding 6 runners in the opener, while the Lancers left just 2 of 20 baserunners aboard throughout the, 17-1, victory.
Thomas pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run on 2 hits and a season-high 4 walks, while she struck out 4 on the afternoon.
Amy Thomas improved to 12-0 with 5 shutout innings in the nightcap, as she tossed her 45th consecutive scoreless inning. Thomas allowed 3 hits while striking out 7 and issuing no walks in the victory. Casandrah Carreon homered and drove in 4 runs, while Sarah Hurlbut went deep with a 2-run homer in the second inning.
