With 7 mercy-rule victories in a row, including 10-2 and 14-0 wins this afternoon in non-conference action over Dana (NE), the NAIA's No. 1-ranked California Baptist (27-1) extends its winning streak to 24 games.
Amy Thomas also stretched her current streak to 50 innings since allowing her last earned run, with a 1-hit shutout in game 2. Over her past 2 outings, Thomas (14-0) has allowed just the one hit, as she struck out 7 and did not walk a batter in this afternoon's game-2 victory.
The Lancers led, 7-0, heading to the fourth inning, and then scored a touchdown in the frame, as they sent 11 batters to the plate in the 4-hit, 3-error carousel. Overall, California Baptist benefited from 8 Dana errors and did not make one of its own on the afternoon.
Dana falls to 6-11 on the campaign.
The Lancers scored 2 runs in every inning but the second in the opener, as they pounded out 12 hits en route to a, 10-2, victory. Every starter besides Nikki Lowe, Erin Moore and Shawna Rainwater had a hit in the game, as the aforementioned trio combined to draw 5 of the team's 7 walks.
Sara Goforth had 3 hits?including a pair of infield singles?and scored 2 runs while stealing a trio of bases in the win, as California Baptist clipped 7 bases and benefited from 3 past balls, a wild pitch and 5 Vikings errors in the game.
Dana tied the score at 2-2 on Heather Parsons' 2-run shot in the top of the third inning, but Casandrah Carreon blasted a 2-run homer of her own in the bottom of the frame to put the Lancers ahead for good, at 4-2.
After Candice Thomas struck out 2 Vikings in a row to end a 2-on, 1-out threat in the top of the fourth, Goforth led off the home half of the inning with a bunt single and proceeded to steal a pair of bases ahead of Chantal Millard's sacrifice fly to make the score 5-2.
Following Millard's sac fly, Lowe coaxed a walk, stole second and then came around to score on Geanie Jenkins' RBI double, giving California Baptist a 6-2 lead and effectively chasing starting pitcher Mindy Schoop, who took the loss and gave up 6 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits and 5 walks while registering 2 strikeouts.
Pinch hitter Karina Slauenwhite greeted reliever Cassie Lager with a double in the right-centerfield gap that started a 2-run rally, featuring an RBI single from Millard and Jenkins' second RBI double of the game, making the score 8-2 after 5 innings.
Kelly Maconachy and Goforth each drove in a run with a sixth-inning single, as the Lancers won by a final score of 10-2, giving Candice Thomas her 13th win against just one loss. Thomas went 6 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 earned runs while walking one and striking out 9 for her 12th win in a row.
