RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Amy Thomas threw a one-hitter for California Baptist in the opening game a doubleheader sweep (8-0, 3-1) over Dixie State. The reigning 2007 NAIA Pitcher of the Year hurled a no-hitter through the first five innings of work, but watch the Rebels' Dabney McIntyre drop in a bloop-single for the only hit of the game to lead off the sixth. Thomas (3-1) struck out three in the win.
The Lancers (7-1) have outscored their opponents in the last six games 63-9 averaging 10.5 runs a game over that stretch.
Erin Moore and Sarah Hurlbut led the way for the Lancers in the opener with Moore going 2-for-3 and Hurlbut going 1-for-4 with both driving in a pair of runs. Hurlbut's runs came on a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the fifth. The Lancers led 6-0 with two outs when Hurlbut smashed the homer over the left-center field fence to give CBU the 8-0 run-rule.
Caty Reeves hit her first home run of the year when she roped a shot down the left field line in the fifth inning.
Sarah Goforth and Chantal Millard also drove in a run each in the opener.
In the nightcap, California Baptist scored all three runs in the bottom of the third. That was all CBU needed as Melanie Ahumada (4-0) and Thomas combined to allow just one run. Ahumada threw 5.1 innings before she turned it over to Thomas who went the final 2.1 en-route to picking up her second save of the year.
Kelly Maconachy singled to lead off the third, and Goforth made it back-to-back singles after she drove one to center field. Chantal Millard then cleared the bases with a two-run double to right center. Moore then doubled to left center to score Millard.
The Rebels tried to answer in the top half of the fourth, but could only come up with one run.
CBU will now host Cal State San Bernardino, Monday, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
