COSTA MESA, Calif. ? A sixth inning flame lit by the California Baptist offense paid off big dividends in the second game of a doubleheader sweep as CBU downed Vanguard 5-0 and 5-1.
The Lancers (37-3, 10-0) scored all five of its runs, in the second game, in the sixth inning after trailing 1-0 through the first five innings. Sarah Hurlbut started the rally when she ripped a single down the left field line that scored Jessica Foerster from third and then Sara Goforth forced an error by the Vanguard defense with a ground ball up the middle that scored Hurlbut for the eventual winning run. Chantal Millard drove in a pair of runs with a double to right field before Nikki Lowe drove in the final insurance run with a single.
For Hurlbut it was her third hit of the day as she went 3-for-4 in the nightcap. Millard went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Melanie Ahumada (17-1) went the distance allowing just one earned run on three hits, two of which came in the second inning that scored the only Lion run.
In the opener, Amy Thomas (20-2) scattered five hits in a seven-inning, complete game shutout while the Lancers scored five runs in the first two innings and handed the Lion's ace, Jennifer Olvera, her first loss of the year.
Erin Moore led the way going 3-for-4 including a two-run shot over the right field fence in top of the first. Millard reached base with a single and then stole second before Moore hit her seventh homer of the season.
CBU added three more runs in the second, two of which came on a triple by Goforth that scored Hurlbut and Briana Corral. Goforth scored the final run of the contest on a Millard single to left field.
