RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- A week ago, California Baptist University was fighting for a playoff spot. This week, the Lancers are contending for a PacWest championship after taking three of four from conference-leader Dixie State in St. George, Utah, last week.
It was CBU's offense, which is tops in the PacWest, that it to upsetting the ninth-ranked team in NCAA Division II and No. 1 team in the West Region, according to the NCBWA. It was the Red Storm's first series defeat since 2013. APU is in a different boat than the Lancers, dropping a four-game series in Oakland to Holy Names its last time out.
For the fourth week in a row, a Lancer received a PacWest weekly award when Antonio Chavarria was named the conference Player of the Week Monday. The third baseman played an instrumental role in CBU claiming a 3-1 series victory over No. 9-ranked Dixie State. Through four games, he batted .688 (11-for-16) with eight RBI and a 1.313 slugging percentage. He logged six extra-base hits, with four doubles and two home runs.
It was a standout week in what has been a hot season at the plate for Chavarria. He currently leads the PacWest in hits (59) and is tied for second in RBIs (38), third in batting average (.393) and slugging percentage (.627) on the year. The past three weeks, Brian Ruhm earned the PacWest Newcomer of the Week award, Nathan Antoun was the Player of the Week and Tyson Miller was the Pitcher of the Week. Jeremy McDonald was named a Pitcher of the Week earlier in the year, as well.
SERIES NOTES
Azusa Pacific holds an 11-game lead in the all-time series, but it has gone in CBU's favor over recent years, with the Lancers hold an 11-5 record versus the Cougars since 2010. Last season's series at APU was split evenly, but CBU won three of four games the last time the Cougars visited Totman Stadium in 2012. The Lancers also swept the home-away series back in 2010. Azusa Pacific owns the longest winning streak in this series at six games from 2001 to 2003. The Lancers longest run of wins over the Cougars tops at five games, which they did in 2005-06 and 2010-11. Since CBU's last winning streak in 2011, no team has won more than two games in a row.
A LOOK AT THE COUGARS
Along with a pitching staff headlined by Josh Staumont that holds a 3.97 team ERA, Azusa Pacific is balanced with a potent offense that bats .309 and ranks No. 1 in the conference in runs (240), tied for first in home runs (31) and second in RBI (216), total bases (595) and slugging percentage (.458). The Cougars do rank first in in the PacWest in strikeouts (301) and eighth in field percentage (.956) with 59 errors on the year. Jordan Brower is the team's top slugger with a .403 batting average, 37 RBI and 17 doubles that rank 13th in Division II. Daniel Martin (.387, 44 RBI, 11 home runs), Blake James (.364), Ryan Santana (.352, 11 doubles), Mitch Dergazarian (.333, 11 doubles, five stolen bases) are all hitting over .300 for APU this season. Morgan Fairchild has complemented Staumont nicely as the No. 2 pitcher in the rotation with a 2.47 ERA and three complete games in eight starts. Josh Grajeda closes things out from the bullpen with six saves, 1.31 ERA and .206 opposing batting average in a team-high 17 appearances.

PLAYOFF PICTURE
If playoffs started today, California Baptist University would likely be in after moving up from seventh to fifth in the top-10 NCAA Division II West Region rankings released by the NCBWA Monday. The Lancers' 3-1 series victory over then top-ranked Dixie State in the West Region and the No. 9 team in Division II should bode well for them and impress the playoff committee. There is still work to be done, though, as CBU will likely need to at least split its next two series with Azusa Pacific and Point Loma to keep in good standing. The Sea Lions are ranked third and the Cougars ninth in the region, with the top-six ranked teams advancing to the regional tournament. RECORD WATCH
Quite a bit of history was made by CBU in 2014 -- a program-best winning streak (24 games) after the team won its first 15 games of the year and last nine of 2013. Gary Adcock also won his 400th win with the program and Trevor Oaks became the new career leader in ERA (1.68) when he was drafted in the seventh round by the Los Angeles Dodgers after one season at CBU. More history is set to be made in 2015, with Andy Crowley and David Herd in position to do so at the plate and on the mound, respectively. Crowley is 108 at-bats, 33 runs, 21 hits and five triples shy of being the all-time record holder in those categories. Herd is seven wins, five complete games and less than 90 innings pitched away from history.
LAST YEAR
CBU relied on a dominant pitching staff that posted a 3.14 ERA and small-ball approach, with a lineup that hit .309 with just 22 home runs (tied for second least in program history) to help it go 39-15, 20-12 in the PacWest last year. It was a far cry from the Lancers' power surge in 2013 when it hit 65 homers, but just as effective. CBU went on to qualify for the NCAA Division II postseason in its first shot and reached the West Region semifinals after entering as the third seed. The Lancers had a flair for the dramatic a year ago, with three walk-off victories from three different players -- Zack Norris, Nathan Antoun and Andy Crowley, who all return this year.
ADCOCK AT A GLANCE
CBU has been a perennial power under coach Gary Adcock, who is in his 12th season coaching the team. He owns a winning percentage of .660 (429-220-1) and has the most wins in program history by 312 games. Ten of his 11 teams have qualified for the postseason, the lone exception being in 2009, with four reaching the national bracket and three winning national titles, including the NAIA World Series title in 2010 and NCCAA Championships in 2012 and 2013. The Lancers reached the NCAA Division II West Region semifinals last year. His teams have won five conference championships, including a four-year run from 2010 to 2013. Nineteen of his players have been All-American, 19 were named national scholar-athletes, 14 were selected in the MLB Draft and 12 of his athletes have been conference Player (six) or Pitcher of the Year (six), with 56 athletes earning all-conference selection.
