Peaking for the Seniors

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — It didn't come easy, but California Baptist University got what it was looking for Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 win over Holy Names to celebrate Senior Day. With the result, the Lancers extended their winning streak to six-straight games and moved into second place, just one win behind Azusa Pacific – the Cougars have one game left, while CBU has two.

The Lancers improve to 9-4-3 overall, 8-1-2 in the PacWest, while the Hawks drop to 1-13-1 on the year, 1-10-0 in conference.

"Good teams find a way to win, find a way to get it done," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We did that today. The team has done a good job wearing done other teams."

CBU definitely wore down HNU, outshooting the Hawks 29-to-4, with 10 of those shots going on frame.

"We had some really good looks today," said St. Clair. "Their goalkeeper made a couple of good saves, but we found a way to get it done. Win is a win, it's not always pretty, but at the end of the day, we got the result we wanted."

Barely 10 seconds into the game, CBU forced the Hawk goalkeeper to make a save as Chaylin Couzens put her shot on frame. Nine minutes later, Miranda Hald was just a few inches too high on her shot as it ricocheted off the crossbar to keep the game knotted up at 0-0.

The Lancers came out of halftime determined to take control of the game and find the back of the net.

Desarae Felix gave CBU a dangerous chance in the 65th minute, but the Hawk goalkeeper managed to make the save.

Couzens finally broke the scoreless drought in the 81st minute, scoring her third goal of the season. Justene Kesterson sent a lofted cross into the box and Couzens tucked it home to put CBU in front 1-0.

Despite the Lancers creating more and more chances, the Hawks had one good look on goal, but Sara Escobedo only had to make one save in the 16th minute to grab her sixth clean sheet of the year.

"We're peaking at the right time," said St. Clair. "We're getting better on both sides of the ball. Our discipline and shape on both sides is improving. We're putting ourselves in positions to be successful."

CBU gets some time to enjoy the win before hosting Academy of Art for the final home game of the season on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. The Lancers conclude the regular season at Dixie State on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. PT.
