Booth Makes Room for CBU Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Resiliency has been a defining factor of California Baptist University in non-conference play, and the 25th-ranked Lancers maintained that characteristic in their PacWest and series opener with Fresno Pacific.
After giving up two runs in the top of the first inning, CBU rallied back for a 13-3 victory over the Sunbirds on Thursday at Totman Stadium. The Lancers improve to 10-5, 1-0 in conference and FPU drops to 2-6, 0-1, with a nine-and-seven inning doubleheader coming up Friday starting at 4 p.m.
Travis Booth earned his first win of the season in 7.2 innings of relief for the Lancers. The right-hander gave up four hits, one walk, an unearned run and struck out seven on 124 pitches to move to 1-0 this year. Offensively, CBU doubled the amount of Fresno Pacific's hits, 14-7, in the victory.
Booth was called on earlier than expected with the bases loaded, one out and CBU trailing 2-0 in the top of the first. The junior came up big and struck out back-to-back batters to end the inning and limit the damage.
"The idea is just keep it small, of course getting out of there with no runs is ideal, but if you can get out of there with one run or maybe two that's a small victory," Booth said of his approach coming into the game. "You want to slow the game down and get tempo back in our dugout."
Offensively, the Lancers were not intimidated whatsoever and tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first on a leadoff Tyler Johnson single and two-run, two-out homer from DJ Porter. CBU scored in each of the first three innings and led 9-2 by the end of the third.
"We've been doing that all year," Porter said of CBU's ability to answer back on offense. "We've found ourselves down a few times and been able to come back. Two runs to this team is really nothing. It's about staying composed and confident in what we do."
A two-out rally led to four Lancer runs in the second inning. Singles from Johnson, Ryan Williams and a walk to Bryce Macy loaded the bases. Porter drove in two with a single to the shortstop, and John Glenn plated two more runs with a double into right field to make it 6-2 CBU.
Sheldon Borson was hit by a pitch to start the third and then stole second and took third on a throwing error from the catcher. Andrew Bash brought Borson home with a single to center field. Bash scored on a fielder's choice grounder from Johnson after a single from Alfredo Rodriguez, who walked home on a throwing error, to make it 9-2.
Fresno Pacific scored in the seventh inning, but the Lancers added more insurance with a four-run eighth, which included RBI singles from Luke Navigato, Johnson, a bases-loaded walk to Rodriguez and a wild pitch.
Morgan Earman threw the ninth and final inning for CBU. He struck out two and gave up just one hit in the process.
Overall, Johnson and Glenn led the Lancers' offense by going 3-for-6 and 3-for-5, respectively. Johnson drove in two runs, scored twice himself and stole a base. Glenn doubled twice, plated two runs and scored once on his own. Porter posted four RBIs and two runs in a 2-for-4 performance, while Bash and Williams each had two-hits, as well, with Williams stealing three bases on the night.
"It feels great to be back home and getting a good start in conference," Booth said. "Conference or not, game one in a series is a big one. Being able to put up 13 runs and 14 hits in game one is a big statement and should help us the rest of the year."
