SAN MARCOS, Calif. — California Baptist University broke into the Division II rankings this week and kept its strong performances up Friday afternoon. The Lancers grabbed 5-4 and 3-0 victories at Cal State San Marcos to extend their winning streak to 18-straight games, tying the program's longest winning streak in the NCAA era.
The wins put CBU at 26-7 overall, while the Cougars drop to 7-24 on the year.
"I thought the first one was a tough ball game, but we didn't give up," said Coach Bill Baber. "It's nice to see we don't quit. I thought we did great coming back after losing the lead.
"Kellye Springstead and Ciara Stapp also pitched very well, with great defense today."
CBU struck first in its first chance at the plate to take a one-run lead. Krista Mann led the frame off with ball four, but looked like she might get stranded after the Cougars grabbed the next two outs. London Miller joined Mann on base and then Brittany Galvez doubled to send Mann home, 1-0.
The Lancers added some insurance in the fourth to extend their lead to 4-0. With two outs and two runners on, Caitlyn Lloyd doubled to right field to drive in both runners. The freshman outfielder then came home on a Cougar error.
CSUSM broke the scoreless streak in the bottom half of the inning, but made things interesting in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4.
Neither team could find the go-ahead run in the sixth.
CBU scored on another two-out rally in the seventh, putting pressure on the Cougars to score in the bottom half of the frame. Alley Johnson drove in Halle Rosario with a single to left to put her team up 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Springstead (four strikeouts) secured her eighth win of the season by inducing two popups and striking out a Cougar looking in the inning.
The Lancers kept things going in the nightcap, once again striking first. Ali Subia opened the top of the second with a base hit to left and then came home on a Mann double to center, 1-0.
Amanda Springstead sparked the fourth by drawing a rogue ball to the body and Diana Gomez took over running for her. Deanna Alarcon joined her on base with a single and the pair moved into scoring position after tagging up on a foul ball. Lloyd stepped up to the plate and drilled a single up the middle, allowing Gomez to score, 2-0. Lloyd and Alarcon executed a suicide squeeze to extend the Lancers' lead by even more, but the Cougars managed to catch Alarcon out at home to end the inning.
Mann capped the scoring in the sixth, turning on just the third pitch of the inning with a solo home run to the left of dead center, 3-0.
Stapp kept the Cougars off the board to grab the shutout, finishing with eight strikeouts in the game.
The Lancers return to PacWest play next weekend, hosting Concordia University of Irvine on Saturday for a pair of games, beginning at noon. CBU holds a three-game lead over Dixie State (15-5) in the conference standings, while Concordia (13-5) in third.
