Still on the Trail

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — No. 13-ranked California Baptist University battled it out with Dixie State, resulting in two close 1-0 losses Friday night.
The Lancers drop to 35-10 overall, 25-5 in the PacWest, still on the trail for their third PacWest title. The worst CBU can do is share the crown with the Trailblazers, who sit 36-11 on the year and 21-7 in conference. If DSU were to win its last four games, it would share a piece of the championship with the Lancers, who just need one win to claim it outright.
Kellye Springstead kept the Trailblazers scoreless through six innings, just giving up the one run in the top of the seventh. She finished with four strikeouts on the night to keep Dixie State in check. Erin Burkhart made some great plays defensively to keep her team in the game, including a clutch foul ball catch in the top of the sixth to end the inning, almost doubling over the barricade at CBU's dugout in the process.
Offensively, Caitlyn Lloyd went 2-for-3 in the opener with two singles, while Krista Mann, Soraya Shahbazian and Brittany Galvez all had a hit in the game.
The Lancers looked to turn things around in the nightcap, but the Trailblazers beat them to the punch by scoring the lone run in the top of the first. Ciara Stapp threw a stellar game in the circle for CBU, finishing with eight strikeouts to keep DSU from gaining too much momentum.
CBU was held to four hits in the second game, with Mann and Lloyd each doubling aboard, and Burkhart and Deanna Alarcon posting base hits.
Momentum looked like it might be shifting CBU's way in the bottom of the third as Alarcon sparked a two-out rally with a single up the middle. Mann blasted a double to right and Alarcon rounded third to try to even the game up. The Trailblazers managed to get the throw on target and the tag in time to preserve their 1-0 lead, which held on for the win.
The Lancers and Trailblazers are back at it again Saturday for another doubleheader, with CBU hoping to close out its regular and home season in style. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
