RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In an exhibition game Tuesday night, California Baptist University defeated local foe, NCAA Division I UC Riverside 7-0.
"We are obviously happy with the result, especially against a team of the quality of UCR," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "Looking at the minutes spread across the team, today really showed the depth in our team."
It was the first time Lancer fans got to see the new squad and several new faces got in on the action.
Two returners opened the scoring for CBU as Sebastian Wiesboeck played a through ball onto Aidan Apodaca, putting him in behind the Highlander defense. Apodaca kept his composure and tucked it around the UCR goalkeeper to put the Lancers on the board first in the ninth minute.
Less than a minute later, Brian Gonzalez got to the endline and played a ball across the face of the goal. Junior Guerra faked he was going to take a shot, allowing Apodaca to finish it into the back of the net, 2-0.
Guerra would get his chance in the 17th minute as Joey Chica and Apodaca combined for a wall pass to put Chica into Highlander territory. Guerra put himself in the perfect position to tap in Chica's cross to extend CBU's lead to 3-0.
In the 23rd minute, Abe Placito drove a long ball in behind the UCR backline as Chica ran onto it. With just the goalkeeper to beat, Chica chipped it over his head and into the net, making it 4-0 in favor of the Lancers.
CBU wasn't done yet and saw a true freshman get his first taste of goal scoring in the 31st minute. Wiesboeck once again laid a perfect through ball onto the foot of Preston Judd, who dribbled it past the Highlander keeper and tucked it away, 5-0.
With just about four minutes left in the half, the Lancers were awarded a corner kick. The Highlanders tried to clear it out of danger, but Caley Powers won the free ball and passed it over to Daniel Westholm, who drove it home to give CBU a 6-0 lead at the break.
Westholm scored his second goal of the game in the 60th minute to cap the scoring at 7-0. Tristyn Bailey found a seam in UCR's backline to put Gonzalez in behind the defense. Gonzalez crossed in the ball to the backpost, allowing Westholm to volley it in once again.
"While today illustrates our potential, it's important to keep our feet on the ground because we haven't achieved anything yet," said Michaelson. "We will stay motivated and hungry and just focus on the next game."
The Lancers' first official game is on August 31 as CBU hosts Cal State San Bernardino at 4:30 p.m.
