ST. GEORGE, Utah — Looking to cap off the first tournament of the year on a high note, California Baptist University opened with a 9-1 run-rule victory over MSU Denver and followed with a battle with No. 8-ranked Colorado Mesa, but ultimately falling 7-5.
The Lancers sit 5-3 on the year after the tournament. The Roadrunners drop to 2-8, while the Mavericks keep their unblemished 10-0 record intact.
Kellye Springstead held down the circle for the Lancers in the first game, finishing with seven strikeouts in just five innings of action. She allowed just two hitters, with her defense backing her by only allowing three runners in the game.
After being held scoreless for the first two innings, CBU came alive in the third with four runs on three hits. Caitlyn Lloyd led off with a single and was joined on base by Halle Rosario. Cheyann Tucker stepped up to the plate and knocked a double to score Lloyd and give the Lancers the first lead, 1-0.
Hannah Thieroff then turned on a pitch and blasted a three-run homer to up CBU's cushion to 4-0 before the Roadrunners could even get an out. The Lancers put two more runners on base, but MSUD was able to escape the inning with only the four-run damage.
The Roadrunners cut the score to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth, but couldn't hold off the Lancers as they took a commanding lead in the top of the fifth, despite going down two outs.
Shaye Felix and Ali Subia started the rally with back-to-back singles, before Amanda Springstead drilled the second home run of the day to put CBU in front 7-1.
The Lancers weren't done yet, however, as Diana Gomez singled to keep the rally going. It allowed Lloyd to send a long ball over the fence to increase CBU's lead to 9-1 and threaten putting the mercy rule in play.
CBU needed just three outs to secure the early victory and got just that on three-straight strikeouts from Kellye Springstead.
In the second game, CBU jumped out to a 3-0 lead early. Thieroff got it started in the bottom of the second with a solo shot before Halle Rosario blasted a two-out, two-run home run, scoring Lloyd, who had got on base with a walk.
CMU responded in its next chance at the plate, tying the game up 3-3. The Mavericks took the lead with a run in the fifth and three in the seventh to put pressure on the Lancers to score four to keep the game going.
CBU put together a nice rally as Felix led off with a single to left and Ali Subia followed with a single just inside the left-field foul line. The Mavericks managed to get an out to put runners on the corners, but Gomez made solid contact for an RBI single to cut the margin to three runs, 7-4.
The Lancers loaded up the bases on a Lloyd single to left and Amanda Springstead came home on the next play, despite CMU getting the second out. It was all the Lancers were allowed, however, as the Mavericks sealed the 7-5 victory.
CBU continues on the road, heading to the Cactus Classic next weekend in Tucson, Ariz.
