AZUSA, Calif. — After getting rained out last weekend, California Baptist University was excited to get back to playing and opened the PacWest season with two wins over rival Azusa Pacific Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers improve to 7-3 on the year, 2-0 in conference with the doubleheader sweep, while the Cougars drop to 4-7 overall, 0-2 in the PacWest.
It was a defensive duel in the opener, with Caitlyn Lloyd providing the lone run for the Lancers on a Halle Rosario base hit in the fourth.
Ciara Stapp held down the circle for CBU, throwing seven complete innings where she only allowed one Cougar hit and struck out four batters.
After being held to just one run in the first game, CBU exploded offensively in the nightcap. In their first chance at the plate, the Lancers scored seven runs on five hits in the top of the first.
Lloyd led things off with a base hit up the middle on the first pitch she saw and was joined on base by Cheyann Tucker, who drew four-straight balls. Soraya Shahbazian loaded the bases with a bunt single, allowing Hannah Thieroff to drive in the first run with a single up the middle, 1-0.
The Cougars managed to get the next play at the plate, but it kept the bases loaded with one out.
Anise Avalos tucked a single in fair territory down the left-field line to score Shahbazian and Ali Subia singled to score two more runners, 4-0. Deanna Alarcon loaded the bases once again with a free ticket to first. Amanda Springstead followed with another walk, making it 5-0 in favor of the visitors.
APU switched pitchers, but the damage didn't stop as Lloyd made her second appearance at the plate in the inning and a Cougar error allowed two more Lancers to score, 7-0.
Kellye Springstead and her defense held firm for four-straight innings, only allowing two base runners over that time, but no hits. She finished with four strikeouts in the win, only allowing two hits and one run.
The run came in the fifth, but it was the only time the Cougars would get on the board.
CBU got back the run and then some with a two-run top of the seventh to all but seal the 9-1 victory. With one out and a runner on first, Amanda Springstead blasted a home run to give the Lancers the eight-run victory.
The Lancers return home to John C. Funk Stadium for a pair of nonconference games against La Sierra on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
