Shutting it Down

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Despite the chilly weather, California Baptist University got hot at the plate and shut it down on defense to grab 12-0 (five innings) and 5-0 wins over La Sierra Wednesday night.
The Lancers improve to 9-3 overall, while the Golden Eagles drop to 6-11-1.
"We played two great games today," said Caitlyn Lloyd. "I was looking forward to today's games because I've been struggling at the plate recently, but I was determined to have a better mindset and put the ball in play hard. Coach B [Bill Baber] tells me when I think [too much] about hitting, is when it doesn't work out, so I just went up to bat and thought about getting on base for my team and trying to start a rally to score runs."
Lloyd – who finished the day 5-for-8, three runs and six RBIs – led things off with a double to left center and came home on a no-doubter to pretty dead center from Soraya Shahbazian to put the Lancers up 2-0 early. Hannah Thieroff followed with a solo shot to left, before the Eagles could get out of the inning, trailing 3-0.
The Lancer defense kept La Sierra from putting a single runner on base until the third, while continuing to stay hot at the plate.
In the bottom of the second, Ali Subia led off with a home run of her own, before Deanna Alarcon drew four balls. LSU managed to get the next out, but Lloyd tripled to send Alarcon in and a Cheyann Tucker double allowed Lloyd to score, 6-0.
LSU tried to put something together in the next frame, but Ciara Stapp kept her shutout intact.
CBU kept things rolling in the third, loading up the bases with just one out. Amanda Springstead knocked a blooper single in shallow right to score one runner and a fielder's choice plated another runner to extend the Lancers' lead to 8-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Lancers all but sealed the victory with four more runs on two hits and an error.
Like it did in the third, CBU loaded up the bases on one out off a Diana Gomez walk, Manoa Weijgertse basehit and Subia walk. Alarcon advanced all three runners after keeping a good eye and drawing ball four, 9-0.
The Eagles looked like they would get out of the jam with just the one run, but a two-out error kept the inning going and scored another runner. Lloyd capped the scoring with a two-run double with a shot past the shortstop, 12-0.
LSU needed to score five runs in the top of the fifth to keep the game alive, but Stapp struck out two batters and induced a grounder to shortstop to seal her fourth victory of the year, 12-0.
In the nightcap, the Eagles were the first team to get a spark on offense, loading up the bases with no outs in their first chance at the plate. Kellye Springstead came in for the Lancers and took the next three LSU batters down in order to get CBU out of the jam.
CBU took the lead in the bottom of the third, 2-0. Subia took advantage of a fielding error to get on base and make her way to second. Alarcon then doubled to right to send Subia home. Gomez sacrificed a bunt to advance her to third, allowing Lloyd to drive her home with a base hit straight up the middle.
The Lancers tacked on another run in the fourth as Alley Johnson tagged home off a perfect sacrifice bunt from Subia, 3-0.
It got the juices flowing for CBU as Lloyd knocked another triple in the fifth to send home Gomez, who had singled aboard. Tucker then laid down a suicide squeeze bunt, grabbing an RBI as Lloyd came home safely, 5-0.
La Sierra prevented the run-rule from coming into play, holding CBU scoreless in the bottom of the sixth.
The Lancers took the field and took down the Eagles in order, including Springstead's eighth strikeout of the game to end it, 5-0.
CBU remains at home for four more double headers, hosting Dominican next on Monday and Tuesday, both doubleheaders, for a four-game series. First pitch both nights is slated for 5:00 p.m.
