Two Vicious Circles

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Getting a no-hitter is hard enough, but back-to-back no-hitters is something in itself.
That's what California Baptist University did Monday night as it shut out Dominican University of California 5-0 and 8-0 (run-rule).
The Lancers improve to 11-3 overall and remain undefeated in PacWest play at 4-0. The Penguins drop to 6-12 on the year, 2-4 in conference with the pair of losses.
In the opener, Ciara Stapp held down the circle for the Lancers, throwing five strikeouts and not allowing a single hit in seven innings of action to keep the Penguins off the board.
"There are no words," said Stapp. "It was awesome."
Kellye Springstead repeated the no-hitter feat in the nightcap, finishing with a season-high nine strikeouts – just two shy of her career high – in five innings.
"I felt incredible," said Springstead. "Just going out there and being able to pitch for our team and not give up any hits, it was pretty awesome."
While the two pitchers kept the Penguins at bay, the Lancer offense backed them up with some big hits in both games.
"I think it really hypes us up as a team, being able to make those tough plays – like Caitlyn [Lloyd] had a couple for me in the second game – and use that energy in our hitting is awesome," said Springstead.
"When your offense knows the other team hasn't gotten any runs or hits off you, it allows them to have more confidence when they go up to bat," said Stapp. "They can relax since they're not having to score since the other team hasn't gotten any runs."
Caitlyn Lloyd led the offense off with a solo shot over the fence at right center in the first inning of the day to give CBU a quick 1-0 lead.
Things cooled off a little from there, until the Lancers capitalized again in the bottom of the fifth. Ali Subia led the frame off with a blooper to shallow right and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt – and almost error – from Anise Avalos. Amanda Springstead drew ball four and Lloyd loaded the bases up with a single to center.
Cheyann Tucker took advantage of the opportunity and knocked a double, deep into the gap between left and center to send in two runners, 3-0. Soraya Shahbazian followed with a first-pitch double of her own, 5-0.
The Penguins managed to get out of the inning without conceding more runs, but the Lancer defense held firm and grabbed the 5-0 victory.
In the nightcap, the Lancers got on the board early, scoring two runs in the first. Shahbazian doubled with one out to score Lloyd, before Hannah Thieroff traded places with her with an RBI double of her own, 2-0.
CBU kept it going in the third as Shahbazian started the inning with a leadoff walk. She was joined on base by Thieroff, with Alley Johnson taking over the base running from first. The pair inched closer to home off a perfectly laid down sacrifice bunt from Halle Rosario, before Manoa Weijgertse blasted a base hit right up the middle to plate both runners, 4-0.
The Penguins managed to get out of a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the third, but couldn't hold off the Lancers in the fourth.
Cheyann Tucker took a rogue pitch to the body and Shahbazian joined her on base with ball four before Dominican managed to get one out. Rosario took a free trip to first on another walk, loading up the bases once more.
Dominican got the force out at home on the next play, but Ali Subia doubled to center field to score two runners, 6-0. The Penguins thought they might get to avoid the run-rule coming into play, but the grounder to short stop went right through her legs to send two more runners home, 8-0.
Springstead sealed the nightcap victory with her ninth strikeout of the game to lead off the fifth, before Lloyd made an incredible catch in foul left territory and Avalos fielded a clean grounder at short stop to end the game, 8-0.
CBU and Dominican are back in action tomorrow night for another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
