WAIPAHU, Hawai'i — There must be something in the water in Hawaii as No. 25-ranked California Baptist University saw multiple home runs in 7-0 and 12-0 (five innings) wins at Chaminade Wednesday evening.
Hannah Thieroff went 4-for-8 on the night, with three home runs to put her tally to seven in five games and 12 on the year as the Lancers improve to 19-4 overall, 11-1 in the PacWest. Chaminade drops to 4-15 on the year, 1-11 in conference.
Caitlyn Lloyd got things started with just the second pitch of the game, blasting a solo shot over the fence at center field, 1-0. After Soraya Shahbazian singled up the middle, Thieroff drilled her her first home run of the day to increase CBU's lead to 3-0.
In the bottom half of the frame, Ciara Stapp struck out three Silverswords in order to keep momentum on CBU's side.
Things cooled off a little offensively, however, as the Lancers were held scoreless for the next three innings.
Thieroff was just getting warmed up and fired off a three-run homer in the top of the fifth. With runners at second and third after a Shahbazian sacrifice bunt, Thieroff turned on the first pitch she saw and sent it sailing over the fence at left center, 6-0.
CBU scored one more run in the top of the seventh, after Lloyd led off with a full-count walk. Shahbazian then sent her home with a double deep in the gap between left and center field, 7-0.
Despite the Silverswords threatening, the Lancer defense held them off to secure the 7-0 victory. Stapp finished with eight strikeouts – tying her career high – no walks and just three hits in seven innings in the circle.
The home run derby didn't stop in the nightcap, as Shahbazian started with a two-run homer and Thieroff drilled yet another home run right after to put CBU up 3-0 early.
In the top of the fourth, CBU loaded the bases and exploded for seven runs to take a commanding 10-0 upper hand. Cheyann Tucker sent one in after she was hit by a pitch and Anise Avalos walked in another. Amanda Springstead singled to left to advance all the runners once more, before Lloyd knocked a grand slam, 10-0.
Chaminade tried to respond in the bottom half of the inning, getting a runner on base, but Kellye Springstead and Thieroff teamed up for a double play and Springstead struck out the third batter to keep the Silverswords off the board.
CBU struck again in the fourth, scoring a run off a wild pitch and another on an Anise Avalos RBI single, 12-0.
Once again, the Silverswords threatened to break the shutout, loading up the bases in the bottom of the fourth. Iveth Alvarado regained her composure and induced a popup to shortstop to end the inning and get out of the jam.
With the run rule looming, Chaminade needing a strong fifth inning output. The Silverswords got it on defense, taking down CBU in order, but not on offense as Alvarado preserved the 12-0 shutout victory.
The Lancers close out their Hawaiian getaway Thursday with a doubleheader at Hawai'i Pacific. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. Pacific.
