Lancers Even the Score with APU

AZUSA, Calif. – Against the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II, Dylan Stowell came out and delivered a dominant complete-game performance for California Baptist University, leading the No. 21 Lancers to a 13-2 win over No. 1 Azusa Pacific on Friday night.
A complete team performance at the plate, which included 19 hits and three home runs, were crucial to the Lancers' victory at the Cougar Baseball Complex, as well. CBU improves to 26-14, 19-11 in conference and hands top-ranked APU (34-4, 24-4) just its fourth loss of the year and ends the Cougars' eight-game winning streak.
"Every time I go out, I try to throw pitch by pitch, no matter the opponent," Stowell said. "They're a great team, so obviously there's excitement and everyone is excited, which is great, but me it's just about making pitches one at a time.
"This was an important win, I think it's good momentum going into the doubleheader tomorrow."
The rivalry series concludes with a noon doubleheader on Saturday in Azusa. CBU will then take a weekend off before ending its home season with four games versus Academy of Art Tuesday, May 1 through Thursday, May 3.
Stowell was dominant from the second inning on for CBU, giving up just two hits and a walk over the last eight innings. Overall, the senior gave up five hits, two walks and struck out 10. He retired 10-straight Cougars from the third to the sixth inning. APU's lone base runner from the seventh through the ninth came on an error, as well.
"I felt good, I felt like I could locate my fastball and the off-speed stuff was down. When I needed to gear up and rip one with two strikes, I was able to," Stowell said.
The Lancers out hit Azusa Pacific 19-5 in the game, with five players logging multi-hit games. Andrew Bash went 3-for-4 with six runs batted in, two runs scored, a home run and double. Luke Navigato went 4-for-6 with a double and two runs scored, while Tommy Bell went 3-for-6 with a double, RBI and run. Kyle Oyama (2-for-3) and Nick Plaia (2-for-4) all had two hits, as well.
CBU had a knack for getting leadoff batters on base on Friday, doing so in the first through fifth innings, which allowed the Lancers to score in each of the first five frames.
For the second day in a row, Navigato led off the game with a double and a single from Oyama moved him to third. Bash would then score CBU's first run on a sacrifice fly in consecutive days for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
APU responded and scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 edge. Stowell was unfazed, though. Ryan Williams got the run back and tied the game with a solo homer to start the second inning. Oyama coaxed a full-count walk to begin the third and then Bash sent a 3-2 pitch over the fence for a 4-2 Lancer edge.
CBU strung four singles together for another run in the fourth. Angelo Capolupo and Navigato both singled before APU recorded an out, and Bash drove in Capolupo with a single through the left side.
Plaia added to CBU's power surge with a solo shot to lead off the fifth for a four-run cushion, 6-2. The Lancers then tacked on four more insurance runs in the eighth.
The threat started on a one-out walk to Bash and then a Bell double. The Cougars opted to load the bases with a two-out intentional walk to Williams, and Ryan Mota made APU pay with a clutch, pinch-hit single over the second baseman's head into right center that scored Bash and Bell. Bryce Macy scored two more runs with a single into right field to make it 10-2 CBU going into the eighth.
The Lancers scored their final three runs in the ninth, with Navigato and DJ Porter starting the inning with a single and walk, respectively. Bash drove in both with a double and Bell logged an RBI single right after him to end the scoring for the night.
