RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After going extra innings in the first of two games Saturday, No. 12-ranked California Baptist University grabbed a 3-2 walk-off victory in the nightcap. It came after the Lancers dropped a close 2-0, 10-inning loss in the opener.
CBU sits 31-8 on the year and maintains its first-place standing in the PacWest with a 23-5 conference mark. The Eagles move to 32-16 overall, 15-13 in conference.
Ciara Stapp threw five strikeouts in the opener, while Brittany Galvez and Hannah Thieroff were the only Lancers to post hits.
Biola took the 2-0 lead in the top of the 10th and held on, despite the Lancers putting the tying runner on base.
In the second game, the Lancers took advantage of their first chance at the plate, scoring one run in the top of the first. Caitlyn Lloyd led the frame off with four-straight balls, before CBU loaded up the bases with two outs. A rogue pitch to Halle Rosario plated one run to give the Lancers an early 1-0 lead.
Anise Avalos kept things going in the second, leading off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Amanda Springstead. With two outs, Galvez blasted a base hit to score Avalos and put CBU up 2-0.
Biola responded in the top of the fourth to tie the game up 2-2.
The Lancers put on their rally caps in the bottom of the seventh, determined to not send this game to extra innings. Galvez led the inning off with a walk and moved to second on a Thieroff base hit.
It looked like the Eagles might get out of the jam, getting a second out, but the Lancers never gave up. Rosario singled into the gap just off second base and Galvez turned on the jets. Biola's fielder put a throw on target to home, but Galvez missed the tag as she slid home to give the Lancers the 3-2 victory.
CBU heads to Irvine, Calif., for its final regular-season road game on Tuesday. The Lancers take on Concordia University of Irvine for a doubleheader, set to start at 2:00 p.m.
