RIVERSIDE, Calif. — No. 17-ranked California Baptist University grabbed the series sweep over rival Azusa Pacific with a pair of wins Saturday afternoon, 8-0 (six innings) and 3-2.
The Lancers improve to 26-5 overall, 18-2 in the PacWest to remain in first place. The Cougars drop to 13-22 on the year, 6-14 in conference.
Ciara Stapp had a strong day in the circle, throwing 14 strikeouts on the day. She had nine in the opener, while only allowing one hit, for the shutout victory and then came in on relief in the nightcap, striking out five more batters, including the final three outs of the game.
Offensively, Caitlyn Lloyd had an explosive day after going 4-for-6 with a run and two RBIs.
The first game started in a bit of a defensive duel until the Lancers got things going in the fourth. Hannah Thieroff started it off with a first-pitch solo home run to give CBU a quick 1-0 lead. Cheyann Tucker followed with a solo homer of her own to double the Lancers' lead, 2-0.
With two runners on and one out, Thieroff drove in two more runs with a single to left field. Diana Gomez took over the base running and came home on a Tucker single, almost in déjà vu fashion, 5-0. The Lancers loaded up the bases, threatening to end the game early, but APU managed to get the third out.
CBU scored three more runs in the sixth, however, to still put the run rule in play. Lloyd led off with a double to center and the Lancers loaded up the bases. The Cougars got a force play at home to delay the scoring, but two-straight walks gave CBU a 7-0 lead.
Needing just one more run to end the game early, Halle Rosario drilled a base hit to left field to send in the game-ending run, 8-0.
In the second game, CBU scored in its first chance at the plate. Back-to-back base hits from Lloyd and Brittany Galvez started the inning, before Thieroff singled up the middle to send Lloyd home, 1-0.
The Lancers struck again in the second to double their lead, 2-0. Rosario walked to lead off the inning and made her way to third off an Anise Avalos single and a sacrifice bunt from Amanda Springstead. Rosario then tagged up on a deep fly to left to make it 2-0.
APU responded in the top of the third, scoring two runs on four hits to tie the game 2-2.
CBU stayed strong on defense and took back its lead in the bottom of the sixth. Rosario opened the frame up with a free ticket to first and Lloyd sent her home with a single up the middle, 3-2.
Stapp sealed the victory with back-to-back-to-back strikeouts in the top of the seventh.
