NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – For the third time this season and second time this week, California Baptist University won on a walk-off Saturday at the CSUN Tournament.
Amanda Argomaniz provided the winner this time around on a sacrifice fly to complete a 5-4 comeback victory for the Lancers over Dartmouth in the bottom of the seventh. It got CBU back in the win column after a close 3-1 loss to Cal Poly earlier in the day.
The Lancers move to 12-14 this season and have won nine of their last 12. Dartmouth, which was picked to finish second in the Ivy League's preseason poll, moves to 2-12, while Cal Poly improved to 6-20 with two wins on Saturday. CBU wraps up the CSUN Tournament with a doubleheader against the host Matadors Sunday starting at 10:30 a.m.
Mackenzie Budinger had a monster day, going 5-for-7 at the plate, while Kellye Springstead pitched in both games and a total of 9.1 innings before earning her 10th win over the season in the circle.
Dartmouth scored three-straight runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth. CBU wasted no time and tied the game in the bottom half of the frame.
Back-to-back hits from Budinger and Argomaniz tied the game in the bottom half of the inning for the Lancers. Both came with two outs, as Budinger doubled to left and then Argomaniz brought pinch-runner Molly Kolander home with a single to center to even the score at 4-4.
Springstead shutout the Big Green over the sixth and seventh innings to keep things tied. Deanna Alarcon led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single to allow the Lancers to play small ball. She took second on a sacrifice bunt from Halle Rosario and then third on a single from Budinger. It set the stage for Argomaniz' walk-off sac fly to center.
Dartmouth scored first in the game in its first at-bats, but a three-run third gave the Lancers a 3-1 lead. Caitlyn Lloyd led off the third with a double, while Budinger was hit by a pitch and Argomaniz walked to load the bases with two outs. An error in left field scored all three runs.
CBU made a strong push for a comeback win in its first game on Saturday. Both offenses were held in check early on, with neither advancing runners beyond second base until the bottom of the fifth.
Cal Poly's Hannah Ramelot ended the scoring drought with a solo shot over the left field fence on the first pitch of the inning. Cal Poly then used a walk, an error and some timely hitting to tack on two more runs for a 3-0 lead heading into the sixth.
The Lancers threatened to come all the way back in the seventh. CBU had three hits in the inning, but a double-play line drive kept it from clawing even closer to the Mustangs.
An error and Budinger single put two runners aboard, and Argomaniz drove in a run with a clutch two-out single. With runners on first and third and the potential tying run on first base, Cal Poly put an end to the two-out rally on a line out to left.
