Pitchers Duel in Bakersfield
3/23/2019 7:09:00 PM | Softball
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Pitching put California Baptist University in position to win both games in a doubleheader at CSU Bakersfield on Saturday. The Roadrunners squeaked out both wins by a combined three runs, though, on scores of 1-0 and 3-1 to secure the series victory.
Sydney Truett and Kellye Springstead led the Lancers in the circle on Saturday, as CBU's record moves to 14-17, 1-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. CSUB improves 10-12, 2-1 in the conference.
The Lancers head to Loyola Marymount a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at noon before returning home for a WAC series with Grand Canyon on Friday and Saturday.
CSU Bakersfield won the opener with just one run after scoring an unearned run in the third. Truett, a true freshman, turned in the best outing of her young career by throwing a six-inning complete game in which she allowed three hits, three walks and struck out three.
Both teams were held to just three hits, with Mackenzie Budinger, Brittany Galvez and Anise Avalos logging one each in the game.
The Lancers' best inning on offense came in the seventh, as they looked to push across the run. Galvez and Avalos strung together one-out singles to start the threat, and then Cheyann Tucker was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one. The Roadrunners just got the final out on a fly ball to right to secure the one-run victory.
Alley Johnson led CBU's offense with a 2-for-2 performance in Saturday's finale. Bakersfield took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second before the Lancers got on the board in the fifth.
Amanda Argomaniz led off the inning with a walk, and gave way to pinch runner Molly Kolander, who moved all the way to third on a pair of grounders. Johnson then drove in Kolander with a two-out single to center.
The Roadrunners immediately got the run back in the bottom of the fifth, and then retired CBU 1-2-3 in the sixth and seventh to secure the doubleheader sweep.
